Golf Course Assistant Superintendent

Supports the Superintendent in managing daily maintenance, supervising staff, and ensuring high-quality playing conditions. Key responsibilities include turf management (mowing, fertilization, chemical applications), irrigation system operation, and overseeing maintenance crews. Act as the on-site grounds leader in the Superintendent's absence.

The hiring salary for this position is $59,114 - $62,067 annually.

1. Have a strong understanding of turf grass culture, course conditioning, construction and reconstruction, the proper use of fertilizers and pesticides as well as irrigation equipment operation and maintenance; 
2. In absence of the Course Superintendent lead maintenance efforts for golf course
3. Supervises personnel in various maintenance job responsibilities;
4. Operates all equipment; instructs others on safety operations and proper use;
5. Purchases necessary parts, tools, and supplies to support the shop and golf course maintenance in accordance with County policy;
6. Help plan, schedule and monitor all daily operations including insuring adequate staffing schedules for daily needs as well as coordination of leave requests;
7. Maintains records of minor and major maintenance repairs and safety inspections;
8. Assists with the preparation, implementation and monitoring of annual operating and capital budget for golf course;
9. Performs other duties as assigned.

1. Ability to gain thorough knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures; 
2. Expert knowledge of machinery required to maintain the golf course;
3. Ability to communicate effectively with other staff and members of the public;
4. Ability to safely operate various heavy equipment.
5. Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating equipment as well as for ensuring public safety;
6. Ability to supervise and motivate subordinate staff;
7. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.

1. Associates degree;
2. Two years or more of job-related experience;
3. Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.

1. Must possess a valid Maryland Pesticide Applicator certificate or the ability to obtain one within 6 months from date of employment;
2. Must pass a physical examination prior to employment.
3. Position is classified as safety-sensitive and shall be subject to drug and alcohol testing as required under federal regulations.
4. Must successfully pass background investigation with favorable results;
5. Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
