Job Summary

Plans all educational and recreational programs for the public at all sites operated by the Museum Division, in conjunction with the Site Managers; develops new programs and audiences; cultivates relationships with outside agencies to develop programs that fill a need; and works with Friends Administrator and Marketing Manager on sponsorships and advertising needs. 

Essential Functions

  1. Reports directly to the Division Manager
  2. Works with Site Managers to plan and manage existing annual events and programs
  3. Develops new community programs and experiences, including camps and scout badge programs
  4. Reviews existing educational offerings and audiences and makes recommendations for changes and develops new ones for both on site and as outreach programs, for youth and adults
  5. Develops and manages new partnerships within the educational community to promote internships, field trips, teaching opportunities, and teacher training opportunities
  6. Increases programming designed to serve an extended population such as senior citizens, home-schooled students, etc. 
  7. Works with the Apprenticeship & Internship programs with The Patuxent Partnership

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to gain advanced knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures;
  2. Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Government to the public and to communicate effectively;
  3. Ability to apply departmental policies and procedures to daily work tasks;
  4. Ability to work independently on tasks and maintain accurate records;
  5. Ability to work as part of a team
  6. Ability to develop and manage a program budget
  7. Ability to manage and plan public events
  8. Ability to write education curriculum for programming
  9. Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, POS System, and simple office machines (photocopier, scanner)

Education and Experience

  1. College degree in education or related discipline
  2. Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience
  3. At least 2 years of experience in museum programming (or other non-profit)
  4. Valid driver’s license
  5. Requires background investigation with favorable consideration

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

  1. Work requires operating between 4 remote locations as needed
  2. Work requires the ability to walk and talk ¼ mile without resting
  3. Work requires the ability to work outdoors in diverse temperature and weather conditions
  4. Work requires riding on a boat at times
